The Driver’s Clinical Evaluation, as prescribed by a physician, is an assessment performed in the clinic setting that objectively measures the skills required for driving. The driver evaluation provides the means for the patient, occupational therapist, physician, and family for determining if a person is safe to be on the road.
Features of the driver assessment include:
- Vericom stationary reaction timer to assess braking reaction time in the clinic
- Paper and pencil tasks
- Clinical observation
Areas evaluated
- Braking reaction time
- Traffic sign recognition
- Cognitive skills
- Motor skills
- Oculomotor skills
- Visual acuity
- Visual perceptual skills
- Peripheral vision
A recommendation is made by the occupational therapist based on the results of the clinical driving assessment and evaluation. This recommendation is discussed with the patient and family, and the report is sent to the physician. The continuation or cessation of one’s driver’s license is ultimately the physician’s decision.
Occupational therapy driving rehabilitation may also be available to help patients struggling with the skills required for driving.
