Cathy Sikora, PT, CLT-LANA
Physical Therapist
When treating patients, Cathy takes a hands-on, patient–oriented approach, developing a treatment plan to address their individual needs and goals. She has found this especially important when treating patients with lymphedema. Cathy states “Each patient comes with their unique set of challenges, whether it be physical, emotional, or financial, and often are unable to do what the “best case scenario” dictates. It’s my job to find out what is “doable” for the patient so that they can successfully manage their condition”. Cathy strongly believes in the healing power of touch, stating “my hands are where my strength lies”.
As the oldest of seven children, Cathy aspired to become a pediatrician as this combined her love of science and caring for children. After graduating from Powers Catholic High School in 1979, Cathy attended U of M-Flint and received a B.S. in Biology to that end. While studying for the medical college entrance exam in 1986, Cathy’s career path took an unexpected turn. Her mother fractured her leg and needed physical therapy. It just so happened that the small PT clinic that her mother attended was looking for a new receptionist….and the rest is history!! Cathy was soon cross trained as a PT aide and eventually returned to the University of Michigan-Flint where she earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree in 1995. Cathy joined the APTC team in 1994 as a PT Aide and has served as a staff physical therapist since 1995.
Cathy’s early career focused on orthopedic and spinal conditions. Cathy is a well-rounded therapist and has taken several continuing education courses, including Strategic Orthopedics of the Spine, Vestibular Rehabilitation and Mulligan Concept and has received specialized training in several manual therapy techniques including myofascial release, strain-counterstrain, IASTM/Graston, muscle energy, and myofascial decompression (cupping) as well as kinesiology taping to ensure that she is learning the latest treatment techniques. Cathy also holds a certification in MedX Cervical and Lumbar Testing and Strengthening.
Since becoming a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) in 2005, much of Cathy’s focus has been on the treatment of lymphedema, a form of swelling caused by the abnormal build-up of lymphatic fluid. Cathy received her secondary certification from the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) in 2007, requiring recertification every 6 years which ensures that she stays current on new research and latest treatment options for this condition. Cathy has become known for her excellent care of patients with cancer-related lymphedema.
In her spare time, Cathy enjoys gardening, watching movies, attending concerts, trying out new recipes, and spending time with family and friends.
